BIRD BLACK
I was just thinking I haven´t had a new art crush for a while now, and then there it was…
About two weeks ago I found Bird Black and her work on Instgram.
As soon as I laid my eyes on these amazing illustrations I fell in love and of course I
wanted to find out more about Bird!
I wrote her and she was so kind to answer a few questions, which I want to

I wrote her and she was so kind to answer a few questions, which I want to
share with you:
So who are you and where do you call home?
I’m 1st generation Canadian – 1/4 Burmese, 1/4 German, 1/4 Polish, 1/4 Swiss.
I currently reside in Melbourne, Australia. I’m a citizen of the world!
How did you get into art? Do you have a background in your family?
I’d always loved art from a really young age but I got seriously into drawing when
I was around 9 years old through comic books. I loved the illustrations however just
looking at them wasn’t enough, I needed to know how they were done! So I became
completely obsessed with learning to draw the characters and eventually, it just kind
of clicked. I was lucky enough to have very supportive (and understanding!) parents
who sent me to a high school that specialised in the arts which was a great experience
because it exposed me to all sorts of different styles, practices and ways of doing
things that I never thought were possible!
Where do you get your inspiration for your illustrations from?
Mythology, history, literature, pop-culture, music, nature – anything and everything
really! I absolutely adore the book ‘American Gods’ by Neil Gaiman, it’s provided
endless fodder for my illustrations. My old paperback copy of it is almost falling to
bits because I’ve read it so many times!
Drawing tool of your choice?
A mechanical pencil, eraser and a good set of fine tip black ink markers.
In what do you believe?
I believe that having a positive attitude can go a long, long way – after all, positivity
attracts positivity. I don’t have much time for negative thinking. You have to love
yourself and be good to yourself – if you don’t believe in what you’re putting out into
the universe, there’s no way anyone else is going to believe it either. My Dad used
to tell me that all the time when I was a kid and it’s stuck!
You are also a songwriter?
I am! Music & art kind of go hand in hand for me – different sides of the same coin!
I took piano lessons at a young age until my late teens and my Dad played in a few
local bands while I was growing up so it’s kind of always been around. My partner
is a musician as well so we collaborate from time to time! Here’s a link to some of
our stuff:

What do you see in your future? Do you have a dream project?
Honestly I just want to keep doing what I’m doing! More drawing, painting,
sculpting etc – I’d love to have my own solo gallery show though, that would
definitely be a dream come true.
Completely in love with everything this all-round talent is doing!
I´m sure we will see and hear more of her!!!
