THE NATIVE STATE
Behind the Labels – Bohemian Diesel Marketplace
super exited to share this first “Behind the Labels – Bohemian Diesel Marketplace” story with you now!
I discovered The Native State a few years ago somewhere on the internet. At this time The Native State, founded by the wonderful Scottish based designer Frankie Kerr-Dineen, was still operating as a jewelry, accessories and clothing boutique. After a while, when I saw TNS was doing a clearance sale I asked if they would close their “doors” forever?! They would be back with something new, something different, was the answer… but let Frankie herself tell you a bit more about The Native State and her work:
So who are you and where do you call home?
Hi my name is Frankie and I own The Native State, based in my little design studio in the Scottish countryside.
Tell us about The Native State.
The Native State opened it’s virtual doors in the Summer of 2012. Originally operating as a jewellery, accessories and clothing boutique, The Native State has evolved to focus on my own brand of artwork and stationery. I think my first print, ‘The Native State Manifesto’ sums me and The Native State up pretty well “We are the drifters & dancers, sun worshippers & risk takers. The dancers, the lovers, believers & change makers”
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I am very inspired by my daily life. I had a little girl, Vega Rox, in April this year so this has definitely influenced my current print collection with lots of monochrome prints, perfect for nurseries. I seek out quotes that connect with me and my designs are heavily influenced by my love of my family, nature and travel.
What is the best part of your job?
I love the flexibility of being the owner and designer of The Native State. I can change and adapt the business easily. We had a super hot day the other week (living in Scotland this doesn’t happen too often) and while eating an ice cream I thought up my latest ice cream themed design, ‘Stay Cool’. Within one hour of thinking about it, it was designed and in the shop. I love that!
The Native State girl is….
She’s a creative soul who lives in the moment. She greets the world with a smile and positive attitude and in return is surrounded by good friends, good vibes and adventure. Life has taught her some hard lessons but it has made her stronger and braver. She doesn’t believe in ‘What If’s’ and isn’t afraid to take a risk. She’ll never own too many pairs of boots! The Native State Girl is me.
What are The Native State’s future plans? do you have a dream project?
I just want to keep on doing what I’m doing – growing, designing, adapting! I would like to focus more on the wholesale side of the business and look at the possibilities of bringing out different products.
I was very lucky to have one of my prints sold in Urban Outfitters earlier this year – they were my dream stockist and although something I had dream’t of, never thought could or would happen. It was just proof that you can never give up on your dreams no mater how big – oh now that could be out next print right there 😉
Thank you soooo much Frankie for telling us a bit more about The Native State and for being part of the new Bohemian Diesel Marketplace!
