Behind the Labels – Bohemian Diesel Marketplace
A penchant for travel, a desire to explore and a passion for roaming the untamed wilderness inspired gorgeous freelance textile designer Sharnee Thorpe to created her label Wandering Folk….
Maybe you remember Wandering Folk, I shared a few shoots and an interview with you a while ago already.
I follow Wandering Folk’s journey since it’s beginning over 2 years ago and I’m a huge fan of everything Sharnee creates so I am super thrilled that she is now also part of Bohemian Diesel Marketplace!
Oh I’m so absolutely in love with her picnic rugs! I’m taking mine with me wherever I go; festivals, the beach, picnics in the mountains, hanging around with friend at the lake…. Honestly, this rug is an absolute outdoor essential!!!!
Wandering Folk’s aesthetic is a clashing of influences rich in texture, adorned with tassels and bold in pattern, designed for those who yearn to wander free. The rugs have a beautifully detailed printed topside made of durable cotton canvas, while the under side is made of a waxed canvas so you can lay it on any surface.
Just absolutely beautiful!
So let’s go wild ones and have a picnic… 😉
But first have a look at the interview I did with the lovely Sharnee for the Behind the Labels Series:
So who are you and what do you do?
I’m Sharnee, a beach dwelling, nature loving pattern obsessed print designer.
I spend most of my days drawing artwork for local and international fashion labels, helping them bring their ideas to life.
Who is behind Wandering Folk? And where do you call home?
I’m the creative behind Wandering Folk and my boyfriend Arthur is also a big help when things get a bit to busy.
I call the little coastal town of Hastings Point home on the Far North Coast of Australia, but for now I live by the beach in Tamarama, Sydney.
Tell us about your picnic rugs…
My picnic rugs are the perfect adventure accessory, from the tops of mountains to the sandy shores, or a simple picnic in the park. They are both practical and beautiful…mine never leaves my side.
The idea was born on a camping trip, there was a lot of mud and we couldn’t lay anything on the ground..so thats where the durable waterproof canvas base idea came from.
I made my first picnic rug sample and took it on a 7 week adventure around America to road test the product before leaping into production, it was well worth it and i got some epic pictures along the way which have become the back bone to my brand.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job would have to be seeing someone walking down the street wearing one of my prints I designed, that never gets old.
What would you do without designing?
If I wasn’t designing, I would still be creating something…I always said I would be a florist if I wasn’t a print designer, I’m also obsessed with flowers.
Who and what inspires you?
There is so many talented young labels coming out of Australia, especially around my local area of Byron Bay. They all inspire me everyday!
Also getting out into the wild and exploring really keeps my mind fresh and inspired.
As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration from?
There is so many places to look for inspiration in this digital world we live in, I’m completely addicted to Pinterest, and you can always find me trawling through some of my favourite blogs. I also collect a lot of design and art books which is always nice to turn to for some inspiration.
What are Wandering Folk’s future plans?
I would love to grow Wandering Folk Internationally and for it to be the number one picnic rug world wide 🙂
We have been working on a exciting new collection of prints for our picnic rugs due to drop in October / November! Can’t wait to share really soon!
Ohhhh and I can’t even find words for how excited I am for that new collection! Thank you so much Sharnee!
